2025 - 2026 State Project:  Hope for Veterans: A Path Forward

Our state theme this year is Hope For Veterans: A Path Forward. Our members will be learning about the issues that face many of our veterans today—from homelessness to unemployment to food insecurity. Our project supports Veterans Path To Hope, an organization located in Crystal Lake. Veterans Path to Hope is a nonprofit organization established in 1996 by Alan Belcher, a Vietnam combat veteran and licensed counselor. Since 2001, Veterans Path to Hope has been operated and owned by New Horizons, a transitional living program in Hebron, Illinois. It houses 20 homeless veterans who want a chance to rebuild their lives. Veterans from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and many more recent conflicts have successfully participated in Veteran’s Path to Hope services and have found employment, reconnected with their communities, and rejoined their families.

Our project is to raise money for veterans’ grants and dinner service. The veterans’ grants program is to fulfill veteran’s needs. These needs range from car repairs to furniture, shelter, clothing and toiletries. Car repairs are the most impactful as common car repairs can cost close to $3,000 or more. Veterans often can’t afford these expenses, which means they can’t get to their jobs, doctor’s office, hospital, or the grocery store. If veterans get fired from their jobs, this could lead to them not having money to buy food, pay for their shelter, and service from their doctor, causing the veteran to end up sick and homeless.

We are also raising money for Veteran’s Service Dinners. Every dinner is an estimated $300 per group of 25-30 veterans. These dinners are not just a blessing to the veterans, but they also can socialize with other veterans, which helps their mental health. Socializing can help them share their problems with others who can relate and connect to them. These are the experiences that mean something to the veterans and will stick with them for a long time.

Our goal is to raise $ 10,000 so we can give veterans the support they need. If we raise $ 10,000, we would be able to cover the price of the dinner for the full year and still have enough to help veterans repair their cars. Giving the gift of food, clothing, and car repairs can make a big impact in the lives of veterans. Veterans Path to Hope helps to support the ones who supported this country and sacrificed to keep us free and safe.
